Korean internet slang evolves rapidly — terms popular in 2023 are sometimes already dated in 2026. This lesson covers the durable core that has stayed in use for years: 존맛탱 (extremely delicious, often shortened to JMT in romanised form), 인싸/아싸 (insider/outsider — popular/unpopular), 갓생 (god-life, a meticulously disciplined daily routine), 꿀팁 (honey tip, useful tip), 짤 (a meme image), 띠로리 (a sound effect indicating shock or disappointment).

Fandom vocabulary deserves its own section because K-pop and K-drama communities have generated extensive specialised terminology. 최애 (favourite, often referring to a favourite member of a K-pop group), 덕질 (fan activity, from 덕후 — geek), 본진 (main group, your top fandom). These terms cross over into mainstream Korean enough that recognising them helps with everyday conversation among younger speakers. Treat slang as a moving target — learn the patterns rather than memorising lists, since lists go out of date quickly.

Korean Internet Abbreviations & Shortenings

Korean internet slang turns over fast, and much of it is built by clipping longer phrases: 취저 from 취향 저격, 갬성 from 감성. Fandom vocabulary like 최애 and 덕질 has crossed into mainstream speech, and 덕질 itself derives from Japanese オタク by way of 오덕후. The borrowing runs in both directions between the two internet cultures.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Slang has a shelf life, and using expressions that peaked several years ago marks you as out of touch more than not using slang at all. It is also strictly peer-register — none of this belongs in email, workplace chat, or conversation with anyone older. When in doubt, understand it without producing it.
