Connecting Sentences: ~고, ~(으)면서

Connect two actions or states using ~고 (and) and ~(으)면서 (while doing).

~고 — And / And then (sequential or listing)

Verb/adjective stem + 고 connects two clauses. It can list actions in sequence (ate and then left) or describe two states (pretty and kind). No vowel harmony rule — just add 고.

샤워하고 잤어요.syawohago jasseoyoI showered and then slept.
이 식당은 싸고 맛있어요.i sikdangeun ssago masisseoyoThis restaurant is cheap and delicious.

~(으)면서 — While doing (simultaneous actions)

Verb stem + (으)면서 means doing two things at the same time. Same subject required. Consonant stem → 으면서, vowel stem → 면서.

밥을 먹으면서 뉴스를 봤어요.babeul meogeumyeonseo nyuseureul bwasseoyoI watched the news while eating.
노래를 부르면서 요리해요.noraereul bureumyeonseo yorihaeyoI cook while singing.
그리고geurigoand / and then
Examples밥을 먹고 커피를 마셨어요.babeul meokgo keopireul masyeosseoyoI ate rice and then drank coffee.
동시에dongsieat the same time
Examples음악을 들으면서 공부해요.eumageul deureumyeonseo gongbuhaeyoI study while listening to music.
준비하다junbihadato prepare
Examples아침을 먹고 출발을 준비했어요.achimeul meokgo chulbareul junbihaesseoyoI ate breakfast and prepared to leave.
걸어가다georeogadato walk (to go on foot)
Examples전화하면서 걸어갔어요.jeonhwahamyeonseo georeogasseoyoI walked while talking on the phone.
재미있다jaemiitdato be fun / interesting
Examples이 드라마는 재미있고 감동적이에요.i deuramaneun jaemiitgo gamdongjeogieyoThis drama is fun and touching.
피곤하다pigonhadato be tired
